We can’t be complacent……. Vegetable imports are a serious ongoing concern for the vegetable and potato industries with $555 million imported in the past financial year alone. Over the past decade the trade balance for vegetables has effectively reversed in favour of imports. The main importers into Australia are New Zealand, China, Italy, the United States and the Netherlands, with New Zealand alone accounting for over $110 million worth of produce in 2009/10. Imports continue to pose an ongoing threat to the viability of many vegetable farms, as Australian growers cannot compete with international producers with lower input costs and lower labour costs.

Customer’s needs are changing Singles & couples with lower income do not plan shopping and shop on convenience and price. Singles & couples with higher income are largely driven by lifestyle demands on time and they are frequent top up shoppers. Budgeting families are conscious of the food budget, with some health factors influencing their diets. Established families shop at 1-2 supermarkets and they like markets and the greengrocer. Empty nesters plan shopping trips, seek out and buy specials and they patronise 2-3 supermarkets. There has been an increase in the proportion of shoppers reporting that they are usually too busy to prepare meals at home. Source: Veginsights 2011
