What You Will Learn O Describe basic Computer System O Word processing O Creating a spreadsheet O Creating a PowerPoint. Gaper M CIT 041013

CIT 411- Computer Applications Lecture 1 – computer systems Gaper M CIT 041014

What You Will Learn O What is a computer? O Information processing cycle O Categories of computer O What is a software? O Categories of a software Gaper M CIT 041015

What is a computer? O A computer is an electronic device that performs the information- processing cycle O The information-processing cycle consists of four basic operations: input, processing, storage, and output. Gaper M CIT 041016

Information-processing cycle O Input, the first operation of the information-processing cycle, enables the computer to accept data. O Data refers to facts that are raw and unorganized. O Data is entered into the computer for processing through the use of input devices such as a keyboard or mouse. Gaper M CIT 041017

Information-processing cycle (cont..) O Processing, the second operation of the information- processing cycle, converts data into information. O Information refers to simplified, organized, processed data. O The central processing unit (CPU) processes the data into information. O Random access memory (RAM) temporarily stores programs and data needed by the CPU. Gaper M CIT 041018

Information-processing cycle (cont..) O Output, the third operation of the information-processing cycle, displays processed data that users can comprehend. O Output devices include monitors and printers. Gaper M CIT 041019

Information-processing cycle (cont..) O Storage, the fourth operation of the information-processing cycle, stores the processed results so that they can be used in the future. O Storage devices save both the programs and the data used by the computer system and include such devices as hard drives, CDs, and USB drives. Gaper M CIT 0410110

Information-processing cycle (cont..) O Communications, the moving of data within or between computers, is sometimes considered the fifth operation in the information-processing cycle. O Communication devices connect computers to a network of two or more computers. O A network shares input/output devices and other resources. Gaper M CIT 0410111

Computer system O A computer system, also called a system, is a group of associated components that work together. O Computer system components are categorized into two main groups: O Hardware O Software Gaper M CIT 0410114

Computer system (cont..) O Hardware is made up of the physical parts of the computer, including such components as the system unit, monitor, keyboard and printer. O Software is made up of all the programs that instruct the computer. Gaper M CIT 0410115

Types of Computers O Types of computers can be separated into two main categories: O Computers for individuals are normally designed for one user at a time. O Computers for organizations are designed to be used by many people at the same time. Gaper M CIT 0410116

Computers for individuals Micro computers O Desktops O Notebook or laptop O Tablet PCs O Personal digital assistants (PDAs), also called handheld computers O Smartphones Gaper M CIT 0410117

Gaper M CIT 0410118

Computers for organizations (cont..) Supercomputers O are the largest and fastest of computers O are able to perform extremely high-speed processing, with enormous volume of data and show underlying patterns. Gaper M CIT 0410119

Computers for organizations (cont..) Mainframes O carry out very large processing jobs to meet the needs of large companies or agencies of the government. O are used by companies to provide centralized storage, processing, and management for large amounts of data. Gaper M CIT 0410120

Computers for organizations (cont..) O Minicomputers or mid-range servers are designed to meet the needs of smaller companies or businesses. O Is a multiprocessing system capable of supporting from 4 to about 200 users simultaneously. Gaper M CIT 0410121

Software O Software can be grouped as system software or application software System software O A collection of programs that enables the application software to interact with the hardware O Background software that helps the computer manage its own resources Application software enables you to perform specific computer tasks Gaper M CIT 0410122

System software The four types of system software are : O Operating systems O Utilities O Device drivers O Programming languages Gaper M CIT 0410123

System software (cont..) O Operating system set of programs that controls the computer hardware and acts as an interface with application programs O Utilities help diagnose and solve computer hardware problems. Gaper M CIT 0410124

System software (cont..) O Device drivers O handle the transmission protocol between a computer and its peripherals O when you add a device to an existing computer, part of its installation includes adding its device driver to the computer’s configuration O Programming languages O used by a programmer to write computer instructions O the instructions are translated into electrical signals that the computer can manipulate and process. Gaper M CIT 0410125

Application software O Document production software O Spreadsheet software O Database management software O Graphics software O Presentation software O Photo editing software O Multimedia authoring software O Web site creation and management software Gaper M CIT 0410126

Application software O Document production software O includes word processing software O has a variety of features that assist you in writing and formatting documents, including changing the font (the style of type) and spell checking to help you avoid typographical and spelling errors O Spreadsheet software O a numerical analysis tool O used to create a worksheet composed of a grid of columns and rows O you type data into the cells, and enter mathematical formulas into other cells that reference the data Gaper M CIT 0410127

Application software O Database management software O lets you collect and manage data O Graphics software O allows you to create illustrations, diagrams, graphs, and charts O Presentation software O allows you to project a presentation before a group, print it out for quick reference, or transmit it to remote computers Gaper M CIT 0410128

Application software (cont..) O Photo editing software O allows you to manipulate digital photos O you can make the images brighter, add special effects to the photo, add additional images to a photo, or crop the photo to include only relevant parts of the image O Multimedia authoring software O allows you to record digital sound files, video files, and animations O Web site creation and management software O allows you to create and manage Web sites Gaper M CIT 0410129
