2 OBJECTIVES SWBAT  Exercise techniques used to warm up the voice.  Understand the aspects of vocal variety in regards to public speaking.  Understand proper body language and use of props in regards to public speaking.

4 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD VOICE What do you believe are characteristics of a good voice?

5 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD VOICE: VOCAL VARIETY Voice: The sounds that you make with your mouth and throat when you are speaking, singing, etc. Quality: Your voice should covey friendliness and be pleasant to listen to. Resonance: The quality of sounds that stays loud, clear, and deep for a long time.

7 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD VOICE: VOCAL VARIETY Volume: The amount of sound produced. Control the volume. Don’t shout at your audience, but speak loudly enough to be heard. “Talk from your belly button!”

8 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD VOICE: VOCAL VARIETY Tone: Vocal sound. Pitch: The quality of sound; the highness or lowness of a tone. Vary your pitch. Don’t be monotone.

10 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD VOICE: VOCAL VARIETY Rate: Number of words per minute (WPM). A good rate is typically 125-160 WPM.

11 CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD VOICE: VOCAL VARIETY WPM = ( # Words/ Time in Seconds) x 60 Example: When I read a paragraph from lesson 05, which has 149 words, I timed myself reading for 1:11 minutes. 1:11 on the stop watch is 71 seconds. (149 words/ 71 seconds) x 60 seconds/minutes = 126 WPM Time allowed for speech x WPM = Approximate number of words for your speech. YOUR TURN: If it takes you 1:40 to read something with 200 words, what is your WPM? About how many words would you need for a five minutes speech?

14 BODY LANGUAGE AND GESTURES IN A PRESENTATION Stand Tall Use NOSE in speeches, too! Mirror the energy level of your audience level at first It’s okay to stand still or have your hands at your side

15 BODY LANGUAGE AND GESTURES IN A PRESENTATION Use open hands (don’t point with one finger) Use gestures for Size, weight, shape, direction and location Importance or urgency Comparison and Contrast More advanced Staging-Position yourself for a scene, timeline, or points Bigger gestures for bigger audiences
