13 Gulf of Tonkin Incidents In August 1964, North Vietnam launched an attack on two American ships in the Gulf of Tonkin in response to American and South Vietnamese espionage along its coast. –The first attack occurred on August 2, 1964. –A second attack was supposed to have taken place on August 4, but authorities have recently concluded that no second attack ever took place.
