Hearing Listening VS

Hearing is the automatic reaction of the senses and nervous system.

Listening is the “receiving” part of CM. This is where the decoding of the message happens.

Listening is visual as well as auditory… as we communicate much through body language. “You have your looks, your pretty face and don’t underestimate the importance of body language…”

Refrain from judging or evaluating the speaker. (we should evaluate an issue not a person.) Focus your attention on the message. (look at the problem under discussion as the issue, not the speaker.) Search for areas where you agree. Keep an open mind.

We speak at 120 words to 180 words per minute

But we can listen about 6 times as fast

So we hear 50 words Tune in, think about them Hear 60 words, start thinking about something else Hear the next 70 or so words and tune back in.

Appreciative Discriminative Empathic Critical/Evaluative

Appreciative Listening Listening for information which we appreciate. Listening for information which helps meet our needs and goals. We use appreciative listening when we are listening to performances, music, poetry or maybe even the stirring words of a great leader.

Discriminative Listening The most basic type of listening. Utilized through out all other types of listening. Listening in order to differentiate sounds in the environment and speech sounds. A skill which requires us to be aware of intricate changes/differences in tone, pitch, rate, inflection etc. of the speaker.

Empathetic Listening Listening with empathy to seek a truer understand how others are feeling. This requires excellent discrimination and close attention to the characteristics of emotional signals.

Critical Listening We make judgments about what the other person is saying. We seek to assess the truth of what is being said. We also judge what they say against our values, assessing them as good or bad, worthy or unworthy.
