1 Universal Precautions Sunnyside School District Procedure & Policy 08/09/12

2 Prevention – think MRSA ◦Gloves are to be worn when attending to non- intact skin or mucous membranes ◦Hands should be washed immediately after removing gloves ◦Open wounds must be covered and taped on all four sides ◦Custodial staff will clean & disinfect nurse’s office cots at least daily with District approved disinfectant ◦Contaminated surfaces are to be cleaned with District approved disinfectant by custodians

3 Custodial Services Site administrators are to communicate cleaning priorities with custodial supervisor Custodial supervisor provides instruction to custodial staff regarding cleaning high touch or soiled surfaces frequently Employees will utilize district approved disinfectants and cleansers only (Vindicator One Step # 6) District issued labeled containers only will be used

4 Athletic Preventative Procedures All athletes & staff should be trained on infection control measures Towels should not be shared Athletes should shower after practice, after competitions, and prior to using communal whirlpools, showers & whirlpools should be sanitized regularly Equipment should be routinely cleaned at the end of each day Athletes with open wounds must see the athletic trainer to assess the wound and for bandaging

5 Athletic Precautions Do not share water bottles Hand contact with ice should be avoided Individual equipment should be routinely cleaned Equipment & clothing should not be shared Equipment such as helmets should be sanitized after use

6 Unconfirmed Cases Nurse identifies a suspicious lesion & notifies parent Nurse makes referral to health care provider Nurse follows up and documents in the electronic health record ◦If the site administrator is following up, he or she documents and places a copy in the student’s file

7 In consultation with ERT and public health, decisions will be made regarding next steps by Dr. Isquierdo or designee E Nurse reports confirmed condition to site principal R Nurse reports confirmed condition to Director of Health & Wellness T Director informs the Emergency Response Team (Assistant Superintendant of Student Services, Executive Director of Maintenance & Risk Management )

9 All BBP Related Materials are Available on Sol Under Risk Management Nurses will remind and outline procedure for BBP yearly employee self-education Employees must watch the video and take the test (sending it to Faye Mathews) If employees meet criteria, they may now receive immunization through the district Must sign the consent/declination form and send to Faye Mathews in HR. Ms. Maiden will approve and employees will be notified.

11 Significant Exposure Process Employee completes Report of Significant Exposure Form and Exposure Incident Form with your help Employee is counseled and referred to MBI (occupational health) Attempt to obtain information of the potential HBV/HIV infectivity of the source individual Request support from the nurse if needed Follow up continues and contact is maintained with the employee by occupational health Employee Reports a significant exposure
