STUTTERING Also known as stammering, is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions. It includes fear of having to pronounce specific vowels. Acute nervousness and stress do not cause stuttering but they can trigger stuttering in people who have the speech disorder. Stuttering is not an indication of reduced intelligence. In rare cases, stuttering may be acquired in adulthood as the result of a neurological event such as a head injury, tumor, stroke or drug abuse/misuse.
