1
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543)
2
–He believed that the planets revolved around the sun in perfect circles.
3
Galileo Galilei (1564 -1642) –Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. –Played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. –His achievements include improvements to the telescope, astronomical observations, and support for Copernicanism.
4
Galileo Galilei (1564 -1642) –Was the first person to use a telescope to observe the sky –His observations supported heliocentrism suggested by Copernicus

6
Heliocentric system A system where the planets orbit the sun
7
During the time of Galileo the Roman Inquistion believed the Sun and planets revolved around the Earth.
8
–Galileo championed the idea of heliocentrism that the planets evolved around a stationary sun.

11
Johannes Kepler (1571 – 1630)
12
–Johannes Kepler described that the orbits of the planets were not the perfect circles described by Copernicus but were flattened circles we call ellipses.
13
Who was correct?
14
Johannes Kepler
15
Can you name the three below?
22
Launch of Sputnik 1957: The Soviet Union launched a satellite into space named Sputnik 1. This marked the beginning of space exploration. It was a very simple device that took measurements of the upper layer of the atmosphere and sent information by radio signals down to the planet. It orbited every hour-and-a-half before it re-entered the atmosphere and burned up 3 months after launch. http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/space-race-sci

24
1990: The Hubble Telescope was launched Hubble was placed outside our atmosphere to avoid atmospheric interference in the images it captured. http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/hubble-sci
25
Hubble Telescope The Hubble telescope has allowed us to see beyond our solar system and further into the Universe

28 million light years from earth Sombrero Galaxy
27
Cat's Eye Nebula: Dying star where gases are being released at 1500 year intervals (looking into the past)
28
2004: Technology like the Mars Rovers of 2004 have discovered hints to past Technology like the Mars Rovers have allowed us to make discoveries that indicate that there was once flowing water on Mars
