Goal: By the end of today you should be able to… 1.Define and explain why natural resources are important 2.Give examples of natural resources, put them into categories 3.Explain the difference between renewable and non renewable resources and give examples of each

New Unit!! 1. Create a new unit folder ‘Natural Resources’ in your social studies folder 2. In that folder create a folder called ‘Rivers’ 3. Create a new glossary ‘Natural Resources-Rivers’ Definition: Natural Resources: Anything people can use that comes from nature. Important points: Not man made Valuable to humans We use and modify natural resources in ways that help us live…we can use natural resources to create things that help us

ACTIVITY 1: Organizing Natural Resources 1.Everyone will get a card 2.Organize yourselves…hint, the goal is in the title of our new unit and this activity

Types of natural resources… Animals Cows Horses Chimpanzees Things we use animal natural resources for: Food (meat, eggs, milk) Clothing/material (wool, leather) Companionship Transportation/work

Types of natural resources… Plants Trees Fruits Vegetables Flowers Things we use plant natural resources for: Wood (paper, furniture) Eating (fruits, vegetables) Medicine (herbs, plants) Clothing/material (cotton, hemp)

Types of natural resources… Fossil Fuels Oil Coal Natural gas Things we use plant natural resources for: Oil to heat a home Gasoline/petrol for cars, boats, airplanes

Other types of natural resources include… Water Sunlight, wind, thermal energy Air Land Humans use almost everything our environment provides!

How to classify natural resources… Living and non-living Plants, animals Minerals, oil, water Add to your glossary…renewable and non-renewable resources Renewable Resources: A resource that is replaced as it is used such as solar energy, or is not destroyed when used, such as gold Non renewable Resources: A resource that is not replaced when used, or replaced at a much slower rate that it is used, such as oil.
