Percent Equation The Percent Equation is an equivalent form of the percent proportion in which the percent is written as a decimal. The percent is written as a decimal. part base = percent part base * = percent * base part= percent * base Multiply each side by the base This form is called the percent equation
14
The Percent Equation Find the Part What number is 25% of 60? n = 0.25(60) Find the Percent 15 is what percent of 60? 15 = n(60) Find the Base15 is 25% of what number? 15 = 0.25n part
15
Example 7-3a 84 is 16% of what number? Estimate: 80 is 16% of 500. You know that the part is 84 and the percent is 16%. Let n represent the base. Divide each side by 0.16. Write 16% as the decimal 0.16. Find the Base
16
Example 7-3b Answer: 84 is 16% of 525. Simplify. The answer is reasonable since it is close to the estimate.
17
Example 6-3a 144 is 45% of what number? The part is 144, and the percent is 45%. Let n represent the base. Estimate 144 is 50% of 288. Write 45% as the decimal 0.45. Divide each side by 0.45. Simplify. Find the Base
18
Example 6-3b Answer: So, 144 is 45% of 320. Compare to the estimate.
20
Use an equation to solve: 18% of what number is 81? LESSON 5-3 0.18n 81 0.18 0.81 = Divide each side by 0.18. n = 450 Simplify. Solving Percent Problems Using Equations Equation0.18n=81 Words 18% of a number is 81. Let n = the number. Additional Examples
22
Example 7-1a Find 38% of 22. Estimate: 40% of 20 is 8. You know that that the base is 22 and the percent is 38%. Let n represent the part. Write 38% as the decimal 0.38. Simplify. Answer: 38% of 22 is 8.36. Find the Part
23
Example 6-1a Find 30% of 450. Answer: So, 30% of 450 is 135. Compare to the estimate. Estimate 10% of 450 is 45. So, 30% of 450 is or 135. The percent is 30%, and the base is 450. Let n represent the part. Write 30% as the decimal 0.30. Simplify. Find the Part
25
Equationn = 0.32 40 Use an equation to solve: 32% of 40 is what number? LESSON 5-3 n = 0.32 40 = 12.8 Simplify. Solving Percent Problems Using Equations WordsA number is 32% of 40. Let n = the number. Additional Examples
26
Example 7-2a 19 is what percent of 25 ? You know that the base is 25 and the part is 19. Let n represent the percent. Divide each side by 25. Estimate:, which is 80%. Find the Percent
27
Example 7-2b Answer: 19 is 76% of 25. Simplify. The answer makes sense compared to the estimate.
28
Example 6-2a 102 is what percent of 150? The part is 102, and the base is 150. Let n represent the percent. Estimate Write the equation. Divide each side by 150. Simplify. Find the Percent
29
Example 6-2b Answer: In the percent equation, the percent is written as a decimal. Since 102 is 68% of 150.
31
Let p = the percent. WordsA percent of 200 is 45. Use an equation to solve: What percent of 200 is 45? LESSON 5-3 200p 45 200 200 = Divide each side by 200. p 200=45Equation p 200 = 45 Simplify. 200p = 45p = 0.225 Use a calculator. p = 22.5% Write the decimal as a percent. Solving Percent Problems Using Equations Additional Examples
