Archetypes Plato – Theory of forms

Today in class you will: Abstract meaning from your life! In your sketchbook, create 6 symbols or depictions that represent your life and self: – An event from your past – Something you want to attract in your future – Symbols, shapes, and patterns you have an attraction towards – Sacred symbols, numbers, places, people etc. – Abstract an archetypal meaning from this activity "Christina's World" painted by Andrew Wyeth

Lesson Day: 2 The Golden Rule in Art
17
While you watch this video ponder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aB_KstBiou4 Can patterns in nature be considered sacred?
18
Fibonacci and Composition The rule of thirds is a “rule of thumb” or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa, c. 1503- 05, oil on panel
19
How it works The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as being divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and any important compositional element should be placed along these lines or their intersection. William Turner "Temeraire” 1838
20
Proponents of this technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would. Botticelli, Sandro The birth of Venus c. 1485 Tempera on canvas
21
You will make 6 sections in Rhino following the rule of thirds sequence. You can make it just like this one or use different shapes following this sequence.
22
If you haven’t printed your design by the end of class you will need to sign up with me for a time to use the laser cutter You need to have it printed and ready for next class.
23
Reflection: How could you utilize geometry in your art? Artist Matt Shlian folds Intricate Geometric Sculptures On Paper. More images found at: http://designtaxi.com/news/355141/Artist-Folds-Intricate-Geometric-Sculptures-On-Paper/

Lesson: Drawing symbols into sections of template Day: 3
25
Time to inspire! You should find a quote taped under your desk. I would like everyone to take turns reading their quote allowed to the class. Everyone needs to select 3 quotes from other students they find inspiring to write down in sketchbooks.
26
Sacred What do you hold sacred? Has your perception of what makes something sacred changed at all? How can cultures use the same symbol but apply a different meaning?
27
Archetypes and Symbols
28
Focus on using mixed media to transfer your 6 symbols and depictions designs to your laser printed rule of thirds template
29
Reflection: What did you discover about yourself?
