The Problem – Exploring Facts Large trucks and buses represent 4% of the registered vehicles in the U.S. 9% of the vehicle miles traveled 13% of the crashes 13% of the traffic fatalities 5

Large Truck and Bus Crash Data In 2014, 3,649 crashes involving a large truck or bus claimed 4,161 lives lost 657 of those lives lost were large truck or bus occupants 3,416 of those lives lost were occupants of either a passenger vehicle, rider of a motorcycle or a bicycle or were a pedestrian 6

Large Truck and Bus Crash Data 7,957 total vehicles were involved in these crashes 3,978 - large trucks of buses o 91 - school buses o 31 - motorcoaches 3,182 - passenger vehicles 326 - other vehicles, mostly motorcycles 77 - bicyclists 438 - pedestrians 9 - persons on personal conveyances 7

12 Office of Research and Information Technology Five-year authorization bill sets funding levels to FY 2020. MCSAP grant programs restructured beginning in FY 2017, includes increased funding. Operating expense authorization levels slightly increased through FY 2020. Significant number of Agency mandates: Studies: 4 Working Groups: 5 Rulemaking: 20 FMCSA Reports to Congress: 14 FAST Act Overview 12
