SUGGESTIONS FOR FINDING GREAT BOOKS AT ANY AGE Reading Tips

It Only Takes One Great Book Libraries and bookstores can be overwhelming. If a child is having a hard time choosing the next free reading book, narrow down choices to one or two books. If you can match a child to one perfect book, he will be excited to find more.

Select the Book It is always better to recommend a book that you know. 1. Think about books you read as a child and loved. Many classics stand the test of time well and are just as good now as when you read them. Recommend your favorites from growing up. 2. Read recently published juvenile literature, so you can suggest books to your child. 3. Find an unfamiliar book you and your child can read together.

Just because a child CAN read a book, does not mean he should Choose free reading books at the low end of a child’s reading level to keep enjoyment high and frustration low. Books may have an appropriate reading level, but the content is for a more mature reader. Find out a little about the plot and language before letting a child read a book.

Read the Book 1. Encourage kids to read at least ¼ of the book before quitting. 2. Read with your child to get over the hump. Some great books may have a slow start. Help your child with the beginning to get them into the story. 3. It is OK to read aloud with your child even if they can read independently. 4. If it is truly a struggle, put it down and move on.

Find the Next Book 1. Read any companion or additional books in a series. 2. Look for “read-alikes”.  These are books that have a similar setting, plot, or characters. 3. Look for “style-alikes”.  These are books that have a similar format. 4. Look for more books by the same author. 5. Do Google searches, look at the suggestions at the bottom of the Amazon screen, search lists on GoodReads, bring the beloved book title to a local librarian or book store.

I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Read Alikes: The Gollywhopper Games by Feldman Floors (series) by Carmen Companion Books: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator Books by the same author: James and the Giant Peach The BFG Style Alikes: Books with crazy vocabulary/words How to Train Your Dragon (series) by Cowell Scavenger hunt style alike: Benjamin Pratt and the Keepers of the School series by Clements Other books by Feldman: 7 th Level

E-Readers Benefits  Easy access– no trip to the bookstore required  Links to vocabulary words  Adjust font size  Bookmark favorite or important pages easily  Not heavy Drawbacks  It is harder to monitor book progress  Clicking on links distracts  Can be time consuming to return to old pages if needed  It’s just not the same as a paper book
