Directions: You must work with a neighbor that is near you. With your coworker read over the terms, look and read the information on the picture and read the quotes. Complete the chart. Write the student information letter, tell why you think this picture matches this term and select the quote that best represent the term. Write the message of the quote and who said it.

Democracy Voter placing a ballot in the box Demo=People Cracy=Rule American Perspective- Democracy is the best. Although many US citizens have lost their right to participate in government through out the years. Can you give an example? Soviet Perspective- Cant have capitalism and democracy at the same time. The poor will suffer and you must reward everyone equally.

Equality Workers going home to state run apartments Everyone in society shares equal assets and basic needs are met. American View- Opportunity, Law and Condition. Most Americans believe society needs opportunity and law, but not condition. This is sometimes compromised by race and gender. Soviet View-Equality of condition is essential for society. Society must share its material wealth with all. This was never fully achieved because top officials received more than the rest.

Capitalism Ernie’s Hardware Freedom of choice and private ownership. American View-Provides opportunity for individuals to better themselves through hard work. Makes for better quality, lower prices and rewards for good service. Soviet View- It is evil, selfish and undermines cooperation and community.

Individualism Bad grade on a report card. Working on one’s own to reach his/her highest achievement produces the best individual and society. American View- outcome of your life is created by you and not outside circumstances. You need to overcome hardships and it is human nature to compete, achieve and acquire. Soviet View- Individualism produces few winners and many losers. People are not born with the same circumstances and some are at a disadvantage and others at an advantage.

Collectivism Cooperative farm People working together produces better results. American View Human nature is completive rather than cooperative. It is doomed to fail and takes away the rights of the people. Soviet view- People working together is what is great about human nature. Everyone share share the land and have equal ownership. Fruits of societies labors are equally distributed.

Socialism Workers in a state owned factory Government owned industry, economic equality and a classless society. American View- Goes against one’s rights. We value private property and our right to achieve. Soviet View- Allows wealth to be distributed evenly and amongst all and prevents the “little” people from being taken advantage of.

Totalitarianism One man monitoring many One or a few have total control over the populace. American View- Steals the people basic freedoms and Rights. A productive society can only exist when the people can express themselves freely. Soviet View- It needs to exist so that the wealth can be distributed amongst all. Few must protect the needs of the populace. Although millions were killed, starved or forced into labor under Stalin.

Freedom Man selling newspapers Free to express or do as one pleases American View- Freedom is the core of a happy and productive society. Many are willing to die to preserve freedom. Give me liberty of give me death.—Patrick Henry Soviet View- People are not free unless they have access to the wealth. Government must control the press to prevent capitalist from exploiting the working class.

Wrap Up Create a chart that shows 3 differences between capitalism and Communism. The differences can refer to government, economy, and or ideology. Capitalism needs 4 items and communism needs for items
