Jazreel valley - A case study for water management and creation of new water resource 1

2 About us Palgey Maim founded in 1973 Engineering company for tailor made cost effective projects. Years of experience43 Engineers100 Branches in Israel3 Treatment plants20 Reservoirs150 Million m 3 water reclaimed per year200

3 Drainage Water supply system Water reuse Waste water treatment Aquaculture Water storage What do we do
4
Challenges – 1. How to do agriculture with none of potable water sources 2. How to create new water resource 4
5
Characterization of the region Jezre’el Valley : inhabited villages dominantly agriculture area the area, about 50,000 ha of agricultural land. surrounded by mountains, in dense urban settlement. Non of natural water resource 5
6
Solution – water supply system for irrigation, based on reclaimed water 6
7
Solution Implementation of innovative water technologies and water management solutions that include: Removal and treatment of wastewater Removal and treatment of Urban and agricultural drainage Reclaiming effluents for irrigation Supplying treated water for irrigation Storing runoff water and waste water in reservoirs
8
Environmental pollution and contamination of water sources Severe shortage of water for irrigation Salination of soils Floods and soil erosion Loss of flood water and treated water Neglect and disuse of water and sewage facilities Water supply systems rickety old 8 Regional wastewater treatment and reclamation Reuse of Treated Effluent for Irrigation Agriculture Salinity Control Watercourse arrangements water and effluent storage Professional team for O&M Leakage control in water supply challengesolution
9
Holistic Approach prevent pollution, expand water sources Double WSS - Potable water for urban usages, reclaimed water for irrigation State of the art technologies for wastewater treatment plants for best water quality State of the art technologies for irrigation with reclaimed water Other usages for Reclaimed water: cooling systems in industry, irrigation for sport parks etc.

14 ISRAEL – 85 % reclamation Jazre’el valley – 100% reclamation for irrigation
15
Water reclamation system how it works? 15 Pumping station STP (SBR) reservoir Center pivot Drip irrigation sprinklers
16
16 Equipment and facilities Essential step is to characterize the equipment and the other facilities required for water treatment and water supply, different for potable water
17
17 Water and effluent storage Filtration system Adjusted to effluent Floating suction pipe Disinfection system : chlorination Best available technology – Pumps with frequency converter
18
18 Water harvesting and effluent storage the answer is reservoirs Accumulate every drop of water
19
Drip irrigation adjustment to effluent implementation

Summary Jezre’el Valley is one of the worlds pioneers on reclaimed water utilization. Issues and problems that were raised during the project were improved and turned to be benchmarks for the decision makers on new projects In this days new and improved TP are replacing the 20 years old system in new technologies of tertiary treatment Palgey Maim has a target: development of water sources and Marginal water utilization
