Hurricane Katrina: A Bad Wave By: Stephanie Weddle

“This book is dedicated to anyone who has lost a loved one in the storm of Hurricane Katrina.”

In August, 2005 the news said there was going to be a bad storm. The storm was called a hurricane.

A hurricane is like a tornado made out of water. This hurricane was called Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane Katrina started in the Atlantic Ocean but ended up in the United States of America.

Hurricane Katrina had winds up to 160 miles per hour. That is twice as fast as a car driving on the highway!

It broke boats in half!

It destroyed houses.

It smashed cars.

Hurricane Katrina made waves that were 20 feet high. The waves caused floods.

Houses went under water.

Many families lost their homes.

Thousands of people lost their lives.

Let’s Watch a Video! How does this video make you feel? http://www.spike.com/episode/24823/st/2915896

Where did Hurricane Katrina survivors go? This place is called the Super Dome.

Families had to sleep on cots since they lost everything in the storm.

People all across the United States are helping Hurricane Katrina survivors. What can you do to help?

Hurricane Safety Listen to a radio or television for weather updates Plan a place to meet your family in case you are separated during a disaster. Choose a friend or relative out of state for your family members to call to say they are OK. Have a supply kit ready. Make sure you have lots of food and water! Make sure your windows are covered with storm shutters Bring in outside furniture. Make sure there is gas in the car so you can drive away to safety. If you don’t have to evacuate, STAY INDOORS during a hurricane. You could be hit by flying objects. Don’t be fooled if there is a pause in the wind. It could be the eye of the storm, and the winds will come again. If you evacuate, don’t come back home until the news or radio says it is safe.
