AIM: How is heat transferred and what causes convection currents in Earth’s Mantle? OBJ: Given notes and activity sheet SWBAT explain how heat is transferred and what causes convection currents in Earth’s Mantle with 70% accuracy DN: HW Check- Earth’s Interior Activity Sheet ACT: Introduction to heat transfer, convection currents in Earth’s mantle HW: Text, read p. 14-17; Complete Convection and the Mantle Activity Sheet; Work on Being A Scientist Packet, Interim, Jan 22

Types of Heat Transfer Radiation: transfer of energy through space; Conduction: transfer of energy through solids (collision of molecules); Convection: transfer of energy through the movement of currents within fluids (liquid, gas). These convection currents move due to differences in temperature and density where heat causes molecules to move faster, spread apart (expand) and rise (less dense) and cooler areas cause molecules to slow down, come together (contract) and sink (more dense).
