Ball State University Digital Media Repository …a project of the University Libraries Customization, Web Services, and Storage at Ball State using CONTENTdm Budi Wibowo – Head of Digital Libraries and Web Services (bwibowo at bsu dot edu) Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends

Growth of the Digital Media Repository February 10, 2005: 5,000 photographs in 3 collections using CONTENTdm 3.6 February, 2010: Nearly 200,000 digital objects in 89 collections in the DMR, including Architectural Drawings and Slides Artwork Audio and Video Maps and Atlases Photographs Publications (Newspapers; Scholarly Journals) Sheet Music Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends

Domain Group Authentication The problem – Why do we need it? Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Solutions(Simplest - Complicated): 1.Embed protected media as metadata fields.  Create and protect Virtual Directory on Web Server 2.LDAP Authentication (Not really a group authentication)  Require customizing the following php pages: browse, item_viewer, results and compound object pages-document, viewer, page_text, doc_viewer, meta_viewer, meta_scr 3.Customize the default authentication method  Default method – Permission managed by CONTENTdm Item_viewer.php document.php Permission file User Grant Deny CONTENTdm

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Domain Group Authentication(2)  Works great, but how about reusing existing group in the domain?  Customized method – Permission managed by OS Item_viewer.php document.php Permission file User Grant Deny CONTENTdm Item_viewer.php document.php Permission file User Grant Deny CONTENTdm OS

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Universal PowerPoint Plugin A.K.A Mac Compatible plug-in A little history Embedded Larger Image in Architecture Images Created PPt Plug in Ver. 1 for XP and Office 2003 Architecture Image Retriever, 2 plug-ins 1 same result

Universal PowerPoint Plugin(2) Vista came out in early 2007 followed by Office 2007 Compatibility becomes an issue Needs a new solution, preferably server based We call it PowerPoint Generator Server based component complementing CONTENTdm installation AJAX- based, takes advantage of CONTENTdm API Requires only a modern browser and non OS specific …. http://libx.bsu.edu/cdm4/pptinstruction.php http://libx.bsu.edu/cdm4/pptinstruction.php Works with open source productivity software Demo

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Interfacing CONTENTdm with Others Requirement Simple data exchange between the two Web Service with CONTENTdm API Web Service with CDM API CDM Server XML / Simple data Other Systems

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Archival Files Storage Strategy(2) Hard drives are cheap Reliable, high-performance, and online...storage systems …. not so much Our experience: 30GB of data when we started 2006: Allocated 1.5TB, used 70% 2007: Allocated 3TB, used 90% Can’t continue with this trend. Needs alternative 2005: Allocated 700GB, used 50%

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Archival Files Storage Strategy(3) Solution 1… Unsuccessful Solution 2… Identify and group collections that are done “Index” them with an “indexer” Move them offline to one or more compressed hard …drive(YAAY!) Create a mirror copy on another hard drive Store the safe in 2 safe, but different location Organize the “index” Demo Pictures: http://bwibowo.iweb.bsu.edu/mug.htmlhttp://bwibowo.iweb.bsu.edu/mug.html Offline Archiving

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Archival Files Storage Strategy(3) How much does this(current market price)? 11 x 1TB Enterprise SATA = $1,760 1 Firesafe = $400 Total of $2,160 Cost of having another copy = $2,160 Grand Total of $4,320 + maintenance Cost/GB = $4,320/11,000GB= $0.40/GB Is maintenance $10k? How do you access ? No Student time to move files and drives around Yearly scan of hard drive to check for defective …hard drive using Seatools from Seagate External USB enclosure to access files $40-$80

Ball State University Libraries A destination for research, learning, and friends Archival Files Storage Strategy(4) Our current storage usage for digitization 5TB Online storage, 85% used 12 TB off line archival storage 24 TB including the duplicate 15 x 750GB Drives
