5 Geography Forests cover ½ of the country This includes the world’s largest rain forest.

6 Amazon River Northern Brazil is dominated by the Amazon River The Amazon is not one river but a network of many hundreds of waterways. Its total length stretches 4,250 miles making it the longest river on Earth.

7 Rain Forest The Brazilian rain forest produces 1/3 of worlds oxygen 1/5 of worlds fresh water Concerns about the rain forest Climate changes causes higher CO2 levels CO2 levels can cause changes in oxygen and water amounts Smuggling of endangered animals The government has launched satellites to help monitor the rain forest

15 A little bit of history 1500: Portuguese colonized Brazil This colonization took several decades and expansion didn’t really start until 1650 1822: Brazil claimed independence 1930-1945: Had several dictators and then presidents began to be elected. 1988: a constitution was ratified One elected president completely crippled the economy and was then democratically impeached in 1992

18 Economy Brazil has the largest economy in South America The 8 th largest economy in the world Even though they have a strong economy the income is unequal. 20% of the population lives in poverty. Currency is the Brazilian real 1 real = 0.45 USD

19 Economy Brazil has many different soils and climates, so it can produce a great variety of crops. Its agricultural exports include sugarcane, latex, coffee, cocoa beans, cotton, soybeans, rice, and tropical fruits. Brazil is also South America's most industrial nation, producing chemicals, steel, aircraft, and cars.

23 Language Language is Portuguese Spanish is also becoming popular but this offends some Brazilians

25 Religion Religion: Brazil has a lot of strong Roman Catholics Other Christian religions are starting to gain some popularity as well

26 Attitudes Warm Fun loving Free spirited Hardworking Proud of their Portuguese heritage and the “Brazilian Way” Generally have a casual attitude about time and events Stand close and touch each other frequently during conversations Personal questions are considered rude during casual conversations

27 Food Meat, bread, rice, beans, cheese and eggs are common staples Lunch is the main meal of the day Dinner is usually a lighter, smaller meal They value mealtime as family time
