HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX (HDI) Used to measure the well-being of people, especially children by examining three major factors: – LONGEVITY – KNOWLEDGE – STANDARD OF LIVING

2. KNOWLEDGE Measured by literacy rates (% of population that can read and write) and education levels

3. STANDARD OF LIVING Measured by per capita gross domestic product (GDP) GDP is the average value of goods and services in a country per person.

DEVELOPMENT STATUS OF COUNTRIES Not everyone has the same rights and freedoms around the world. This partly depends on a country’s DEVELOPMENT STATUS DEVELOPMENT STATUS: a rating of a countries social systems, such as education and health care, as well as economic systems.

THE DEVELOPED WORLD Nations with a high standard of living Have a high GDP, strong economy, a well- developed infrastructure and a strong social network that includes health care and education. Have a good base of primary industries and highly developed secondary and tertiary industries

DEVELOPING COUNTRIES Have a low standard of living Economic focus is on primary resources (farming, fishing, etc.) Very little manufacturing takes place Low income, poorly developed infrastructure and education and health care systems are poor Hunger is common Mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa

NEWLY INDUSTRIALIZING COUNTRIES Rank between developed and developing countries Have traditionally centered around agriculture, but are in the process of industrializing. They are increasing the use and availability of technology. Brazil, China and India are the most notable countries.
