4 Plagiarism Training Plagiarism – What is it? ◦The act of passing someone else’s work off as one’s own or of citing sources improperly (Lever-Duffy, & McDonald, 2011, p. 398). ◦Plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source (WPA, 2012, p.1)

5 Plagiarism Training Plagiarism – What is it? ◦Overt coping of other’s work ◦Use of others ‘intellectual property’ – ideas, work, etc – without giving credit ◦Blur the line between one’s own ideas or words and those borrowed from another source (WPA, 2012, p.2) ◦Inaccurate citation of other’s work.

7 Plagiarism Training What can be Plagiarized? ◦Any Words/ideas from others’ work: academic paper, book, magazine, etc ◦Information from a interview or even conversation ◦Especially a copy of exact words, popular quotation or even a distinctive phrase ◦Graphics: diagrams, charts, pictures, etc  Can come form any media: images, audio, video, other media  Your own work and/or common knowledge items do not need to be credited! ◦Reference: Stolley, et al, 2012

9 Plagiarism Training How can You (the student) Avoid it? ◦Properly cite others’ work – whether it is a direct quote, paraphrase, or summery ◦Use proper writing techniques – proper notes, drafting, proofing and editing the work ◦effectively use your time, don’t waste your time and put off doing the assignment?  When in doubt, cite your sources!!!

10 Plagiarism Training The Consequences of it. ◦Failure of the assignment ◦Negative consequences IAW the TYA Cadet Handbook for an integrity/ethics violation ◦Loss of learning experience  All reports/papers in class are checked for plagiarism !
