5 BEHAVIORIST MODEL Philosophy: Teacher directed Teacher role: Direct instruction with academic goals – reading, math, language. –Mainly intellectual development. Knowledge of facts. –Train child to succeed in school by answering questions correctly.

6 BEHAVIORIST MODEL Methods: 1.Fast pace 2.Strong emphasis on verbal responses. 3.Carefully planned small steps. 4.Children must pay attention & hard work. 5.Chooser rewards that are motivating. Classroom: Simplified with limited toys. Only puzzles, tracing & small farm.

7 MATURATIONIST MODEL Philosophy: Absorbent mind, prepared environment, auto-education, sensitive period & freedom. Teacher role: 1.To show children how materials are to be used. 2.Guide child’s selection of material & activities. 3.Develop intellectual skills, not information.

8 MATURATIONIST MODEL Methods: –Freedom to choose activities Classroom: –Child size, carefully chosen learning materials displayed in orderly manner. –Colorful rooms with art & plants. –Divided into daily living, sensory, academic, artistic & cultural.

9 CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL Philosphy: Based on Piaget’s theories that children construct their own understandings and are continually refining them with new experiences.

10 CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL Teacher role: 1.To foster structural change in children’s reasoning. 2.Children direct the learning (intrinsic motivation) 3.Teacher rarely gives information but instead asks engaging questions. 4.Intellectual and moral autonomy (critical thinking and not accept everything offered as truth)

11 CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL Methods: 1.Small groups 2.Find information, analyze data, & reach conclusions more important than learning facts. Classroom: Children are active and learn by manipulating environment with art, blocks, pretend play, sensory tables, science areas.
