Dolge Orlick- guy with broad shoulders, bad temper, not a hard worker. Biddy- intelligent, understands people well, orphan Pip’s age. Mr. Jaggers- very good lawyer, Pip knows him from Miss Havisham’s, stern. Wemmick- Mr. Jagger’s assistant, becomes friends with Pip. Arthur- Miss Havisham’s half-brother, helped Miss Havisham’s fiancé leave her for and take her money. Herbert Pocket- “pale young gentleman” from Pip’s childhood, nice gentlemen, becomes friends with Pip, calls him Handel. Mr. & Mrs. Pocket- parents of Herbert, Mr. Pocket will teach Pip how to be a gentleman, Mrs. Pocket is strict. Flopson- nurse/nanny, takes care of the Pocket kids. Mrs. Coiler- neighbor, “toady”, not fond of Mrs. Pocket. Bentley Drummle and Startop- other students of Mr. Pocket. Characters

Ch. 13- Joe and Pip go to Satis House to see Miss Havisham, as requested, and he gives her Pip’s indentures. Visitations are terminated and Pip begins his apprenticeship, although being a blacksmith no longer excites him. Ch. 14- Pip is ashamed of his home and hates his job, but is bound. He knows that Estella would never approve of a home such as his. Ch. 15- Pip meets Joe’s worker named Orlick and he doesn’t do much. Joe gives them both a day off and Pip goes to Miss Havisham’s house, but Estella isn’t there. Afterwards, he goes to Mr. Pumblechook’s house and when he comes home he finds Mrs. Joe unconscious. Ch. 16- Mrs. Joe can no longer speak and has lost a lot of her memory due to her injuries. Biddy comes to live with them and help with Mrs. Joe. Mrs. Joe wants to see Orlick a lot and is happy to see him. Ch. 17- Pip goes on a walk with Biddy and they talk. He tells her that he wants to be a gentleman for Estella but Biddy is not happy. Later, when Orlick flirts with Biddy, Pip is jealous. Chapter Summaries

Ch. 18- Mr. Jaggers comes to Pip and Joe and tells them an anonymous patron has requested Pip become a gentleman. He accepts but his decision leaves Joe and Biddy distraught. Pip knows his new life of great expectations will be lonely. Ch. 19- Pip gets the new clothes he needs and has dinner and wine with Mr. Pumblechook. Pip goes to say goodbye to Miss Havisham and she tells him he has a good job ahead of him. When Pip leaves the next day, he regrets treating his loved ones badly. Ch. 20- Pip finally gets to London and is in awe but is also disgusted at what he sees. He finds out that Mr. Jaggers is a busy man and gets to meet his clerk Wemmick, who becomes friends with Pip. Ch. 21- Pip walks with Wemmick to Barnard’s Inn, the home of Herbert Pocket, and Wemmick leaves him to his business. When Herbert returns, he has brought strawberries and shows him to his room. He then notices Pip as the “prowling boy” and Herbert as the “pale young gentleman”. Chapter Summaries (Continued)

Ch. 22- Herbert gives Pip the name Handel while they are having dinner. Herbert gives him tips on table manners and tells him about Miss Havisham’s fiancé. Later, they go to Mr. Pocket’s home. Ch. 23- Pips goes to Matthew Pocket’s house to be tutored. While they eat dinner, Pip sees how the family’s life works. The children are being raised by the nurse while Mrs. Pocket thinks she knows how to treat the kids. Ch. 24- Pip goes back to Mr. Jaggers and asks for money. Wemmick and Pip agree to have dinner sometime. Wemmick tells Pip to look at Mr. Jaggers’ housekeeper for reasons. Pip sees Mr. Jaggers making a scene in the courtroom. Chapter Summaries (Continued)
