Review of Art Elements Read pages 24-35 in the “Communicating through Graphic Design” textbook Much of this content reviews what you have already learned about the art elements over the years in art classes. This time, however, the information applies specifically to Graphic Design

Get Started in Illustrator Open Illustrator Choose “close” on the “What’s New in Illustrator” screen. Go to Edit > Preferences

Choose Units & Display Check to make sure your panel is set up like this Set Up Preferences

Guides & Grid Set it up so that there is one gridline every 1 inch Subdivisions should equal 8

Open a new blank document. Go to view > Show Grid This will enable you to draw on a grid Enable the Grid

Tool Bar Guide Select Tools Drawing/Writing Tools Shape Modify Tools Specialty Tools Applications to a selection Slice and Cut Tools View Tools Stroke and Fill Color Screen Mode

Menu Panels Whenever a tool is selected a menu panel appears with various options. There are several of these to be explored that offer numerous choices for size, color, pattern, brush stroke, etc.

Expand the Color Panel Click on the arrow head to expand the panel

Add New Libraries Click on small arrow To reveal more libraries and add new menu panels

Illustrator Practice Assignment #1 Open the Batman Logo in Illustrator Lock the layer and add another layer Using the tool in the tool bar and the menu panels, recreate the logo.

Illustrator Practice Assignment #2 Choose one of the Photos Provided Using the tools in Illustrator, redraw the photo, giving it your own style and color choices.

Bumper Stickers Open a document that is 3” height by 11” wide. Using Illustrator, Create a Bumper Sticker for each Art Element that exemplifies that element. The Art Elements are: –Line, Color, Pattern, Shape, Texture, Form, Space, and Value. Samples are available on the next slide

To Print Art Elements two at a time Put two on one page First open a blank document in Illustrator and set the width at 11 and the height at 8.5 Open the two documents that you want to print. Select all (control A), Copy (control C) and paste (control V) each in the blank Choose print but then choose fit to page and choose printer 3600 Finish Palm Tree and submit to folder on School Fusion Return the Logo grades 12points Questions Work on finished Art Elements Start Travel Poster

Design Principles Read Pages 36-43 and answer the following questions What is the overall impression of an image called? Balance-How do symmetry and asymmetry vary? Movement and Rhythm-What are the three techniques to create movement in design mentioned in the passage? Emphasis and Dynamics-What determines emphasis? What factor creates energy? Unity and Variety-What kind of message does a unified design send? Proportion-what is the Golden Section (Golden Mean) Contrast-List 3 examples of use of contrast.

Travel Poster Choose how you want to promote the destination –Adventure/Excitement/Mystery –Rejuvenation /Health/Therapy –Education/Information/Culture –Spiritualism/In Touch With Nature/Awakening

Travel Poster Choose the Design Principals that you will focus on – Make sure there is a link between them and the message you want to convey! –Balance-symmetrical or asymmetrical –Movement & Rhythm- repetition/visual path –Emphasis & Dynamics- energy or static –Unity & Variety- harmony or lively, energetic, or chaotic effect –Proportion-elements in relation to each other –Contrast-Juxtaposing, elements to make them pop –Closure-creating a design that engaging the viewer in such a manner as to have them complete the message

Travel Poster Decide what your hook or message will be Decide what your image(s) will be Decide where you will place them in relation to the text Include information about the place such as where, what, when. Open a 8.5 width by 11 height document in Illustrator and working in layers create your travel poster.

Travel Poster Rubric 5pts each-20pts Strength of design-How is the space used? Does it have impact? Can it be seen from a distance? (hook?) Use of Design Principles-Which one(s) is/are being used? Is it fairly apparent? Use of Illustrator tools Content-Information? Location, dates, hours if appropriate.
