WHAT IS A ZENTANGLE a drawing created using repetitive patterns. done in black ink on white paper. it is without orientation and can be viewed in any direction. It should not be representative of any certain recognizable object; rather, it should be abstract.

MANDALA The word Mandala means "circle". The mandala appears to us in all aspects of life, the Earth, the Sun, the Moon and more obviously the circles of life encompassing friends, family and communities. Mandalas are circular designs symbolizing that life is never ending. It represents wholeness and reminds us of the world that extends both beyond our bodies and minds.

Many mandalas have spiritual significance to an individual or group of individuals. The Hindus were one of the first people to use a mandala as a spiritual tool, but the mandalas most individuals are familiar with, are ones made by Buddhists. Mandalas are used for meditation purposes allowing the person who is meditating to become one with the universe.

ZENTANGLE MANDALA You will create an original zentangle mandala using a variety of patterns. You will incorporate: ELEMENTS OF ART- Line, Shape, Space. PRINCIPLES OF ART- Pattern, Rhythm, Movement Varied LINE QUALITY- Thick and Thin lines.

ASSIGNMENT #2 SKETCHBOOK ACTIVITY- Create TWO 5x7 pie shapes. Use pencil for this assignment. Using a variety of the patterns from ASSIGNMENT #1, complete two different ideas for a zentangle in each of the pie shapes. Submit your ideas for approval of which would be the best design.
