STEM: Spectroscope Light Diffraction July 4, 2011~ The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope made its millionth observation since its launch 21 years ago Hubble was searching for chemical indicators of water on an exoplanet gas giant larger than Jupiter.. Famous for incredible images. Credit for the millionth observation goes to Hubble’s SPECTROGRAPH Spectroscopy is the technique of splitting light into its component colors The gases present in a planet’s atmosphere leave a fingerprint in the form of the distinctive color patterns that different gases absorb. Analyzing this data can give precise measurements of which elements are present in an object too distant to ever be visited by a space probe.~NASA

STEM: Spectroscope Light Diffraction Question: If a spectrograph is useful to determine chemical composition of radiating light sources in deep space, can we see changes in spectrum patterns here? Problem Statement: What everyday light sources have the same spectral pattern?

STEM: Spectroscope Light Diffraction Problem Statement: What everyday light sources have the same spectral pattern? Grading: Lab Rubric Handout Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Science: SC.8.E.5.10: Assess how technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer space and other remote locations, sample collection, measurement, data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information. SC.8.E.5.11: Identify and compare characteristics of the electromagnetic spectrum such as wavelength, frequency, use, and hazards and recognize its application to an understanding of planetary images and satellite photographs. SC.912.E.5.8: Connect the concepts of radiation and the electromagnetic spectrum to the use of historical and newly-developed observational tools.
