BA in Applied Research & Data Analytics Dr. Julie Kiotas Professor of Psychology 1

Background  In 2014 Governor Brown signed SB 850 (Block) authorizing the Board of Governors to establish a statewide baccalaureate degree pilot program  Requirements  The program must meet high demand career paths that are not currently being addressed.  The selected degree must not be duplicative of courses and programs offered at the California State University and the University of California. 2

History on Campus  PCC supported applying to offer a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing  SB 850 is amended to disallow duplication with CSU and UC programs, thereby excluding the option of applying for a nursing degree  Faculty (Bhadha, Kiotas & Randall) propose the development of a Baccalaureate Degree in Research and Data Analytics in Spring of 2015  Opportunity to apply for a degree program re-opens 3

BA in Applied Research and Data Analytics  This program would focus on preparing students for careers in research across all industries through preparation in research methods, quantitative data analysis, qualitative data collection and analysis, and professional presentation and visualization of data and research results.  This degree is interdisciplinary and would allow students to build skills in research that can be applied throughout the workforce. 4

Certificates In addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Research Analytics, students could take coursework leading to a certificate in an area of specialization such as:  Clinical Trials  Program Evaluation  Educational Research  Social Science Research  Applied Statistics 5

Careers in Research  All business and industry sectors are increasing the use of data and research to inform business decisions.  There is a growing need for well-qualified employees.  Current programs statewide only offer a few courses in research and focus more on discipline- specific content. The proposed program will focus on research knowledge and skills that transverse discipline specialties. 6

Careers in Research Trends  There are 29,542 jobs in Los Angeles in the occupations of Science Research Assistants, Survey Researchers and Market Research Analysts SOCDescription 2015 Jobs 2024 Jobs Change 2015 - 2024 % Change 2013 Avg. 8 Lynne Cunningham, The Studer Group  “What a super idea – and much needed in the healthcare field. As a long-time healthcare professional … I know we have way too much data and most of our leaders don’t have the time or the skills to synthesize this data into something meaningful for decision making; whether it’s an ROI analysis about which new program to start or which piece of equipment to buy, a quantitative assessment of candidates when you are hiring a new team member, or a cost/benefit analysis for a service line leader to demonstrate the clinical quality, quality of life, patient satisfaction and financial impact of a program that controls …I’d love to have one of these graduates at my right hand as I educate physicians, executives and other healthcare leaders about the benefits of employee and physician engagement and patient satisfaction.” 8

Steve Ferraiulo, Senior Vice President Blood Source  I am very excited to hear that Pasadena City College is engaging the state Chancellor’s Office regarding the possibility of offering a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Research Analytics. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that far too many individuals complete their undergraduate coursework without the training and basic understanding of research methods to adequately participate in or evaluate studies in their chosen career field. The in depth course of study proposed with this innovative degree path will help prepare students whether they intend to continue their education in a graduate program, or wish to contribute to the expansion of the knowledge base in their chosen field of study. 9
