Presentation on theme: "Have you ever thought about moving to another state? What about another country?"— Presentation transcript:

Have you ever thought about moving to another state? What about another country?

Some people have moved to other states and other countries, but why??? They want a better life for themself and their family.

What would make their lives better? Better Climate Freedom Food Job Safety Shelter Opportunities

When people move from one state or country to another, it is called migration.

People that move to a new country and live there are called immigrants.

What would an immigrant need to learn before or immediately after arriving in a new country? New Language New Customs (Customs are just ways of doing things.) Example: Did you know it was considered polite to slurp noodles when eating in Japan? It is actually considered good manners and to show that you are enjoying the food!

Immigration has always been a hot news topic in America, but why?

Many people want to live in America! America holds the key to a better life for many people because it offers freedom, safety, higher wages, etc.

So…what’s the problem???

There is a right and wrong way to enter the United States…

The right way… Complete an application Participate in an interview with a government official Take and pass an English Language and U.S. History Test Receive approval

What’s so hard about that??? Only a certain number of applications are approved. Some people can not pass the English Language and U.S. History Tests. The process can take a long time. Some people do not qualify due to their interview answers.

The interview…. The interview is used to find out why people want to be in the U.S. to make sure that it isn’t for terrorism reasons or to do harm. They want a definite amount of time that the person plans on being in the country. How they can be contacted Where their permanent residence will be Family history Good moral character

The wrong way… Some people can not pass the English Language and/or U.S. History Tests. Some people don’t want to wait the amount of time it takes to enter the country the right way. (Examples: war in their country, poverty, spouse already in the U.S., etc.)

What happens when immigrants enter the country the wrong way? They are called “illegal immigrants.” This just means they entered the country the wrong way. Some people want to be in the U.S. so bad that they risk their lives crossing the borders, crossing oceans, being transported in crates, paying others to help them, etc.

So, what’s the big deal?

Some people in the U.S. do not want illegal immigrants in the country because… Many are willing to work for lower wages. This will take away jobs for Americans. If immigrants are here illegally that means that they aren’t paying taxes. U.S. Citizens must pay taxes, so this is unfair. Taxes pay teachers, firemen, police officers, state and government officials, federal programs such as food stamps, unemployment, etc.

What have you learned? People move to make their lives better. (climate, freedom, food, jobs, safety, shelter, opportunities) When people move from one state or country to live in another one, it is called migration. People that move to a new country to live are called immigrants. When people move to a new country, they need to know the language and customs. A custom is a way of doing things. There are right and wrong ways to move to a new country. If a person moves to a new country the wrong way, he/she is called an illegal immigrant. Some people do not want illegal immigrants in their country because they work for less money and don’t pay taxes.
