WHAT IS WASTE?  Waste is any unwanted material or substance that results from human activity or process.  3 categories:  Municipal – nonliquid waste that comes from homes, institutions, or small businesses  Industrial – comes from consumer goods, mining, agriculture, or petroleum extraction  Hazardous – solid or liquid waste that is toxic, reactive, flammable, or corrosive

METHODS OF DISPOSAL  Sanitary Landfill  Waste is buried or piled up  Designed to prevent contamination of groundwater and reduce soil/air pollution  Incineration  Controlled process in which mixed garbage is burned at a very high temperature

SANITARY LANDFILLS  Almost 6,000 landfills have been closed since 1988 and some have been converted into recreational parks  Liners can be punctured, releasing pollution into groundwater  Keeping the landfill dry prevents decomposition of materials that are biodegradable  Gas (methane) pumped up from the bottom can be used to create energy

INCINERATORS  Reducing volume doesn’t get rid of the toxins  The waste must be transported to a hazardous waste landfill  Scrubbers, much like those on factories, remove some toxins from emissions  These incinerators can be used to create energy, not profitable

MINIMIZING WASTE  Waste Reduction  Bring own cups/bags  Donate  Reduce packaging  Recycling  Composting

HAZARDOUS WASTE E-waste Heavy Metals Organic Compounds

DISPOSAL  Landfills  Must have several solid, watertight liners  Located far from aquifer  Surface Impoundment  Shallow pits lined with plastic and impermeable materials  Deep Well Injection  Well drilled deep beneath the water table, with waste being injected into it

TEST MONDAY  Topics:  Sustainable Cities  Climate Change  Waste Management

QUESTIONS FROM THE TEXTBOOK  Pg 588 – 1-3  Pg 595 1-3  Pg 603 1-4  Pg. 607 1-10, 18-25  Complete in a word document and email to metcalfm@lake.k12.fl.us

BELLRINGER: MAY 11 TH  List the costs and benefits of landfills and incinerators. Which do you think is the better method of waste disposal?

COMPLETE BOOKWORK  Pg 588 – 1-3  Pg 595 1-3  Pg 603 1-4  Pg. 607 1-10, 18-25  Complete in a word document and email to metcalfm@lake.k12.fl.usmetcalfm@lake.k12.fl.us  Due Thursday at the end of class 1 st and 4 th period.  Due Monday before class begins 3 rd and 7 th period.

BELLRINGER: MAY 12 TH  Describe the three categories of waste. Which do you think is more common in America?

FOLDABLE:  Create a 8-Tab foldable for the below vocabulary words. The front of the tabs must have an image representing the vocabulary word, the left inside tab must have a “link word” that will serve as your reference or buzz word, and the right inside of the tab should have the vocabulary word and definition.  Words: Composting, ecological restoration, urban growth boundary, greenway, landfill, biodegradable, municipal waste, greenhouse gas.  Due Friday at the end of class. Turn into the substitute.
