What does a working food system look like?
3
Statistics

FOOD WASTE US has twice as much food as required to meet the nutritional requirements of its population. 1/3 of food is wasted: - lack of infrastructure - livestock feed - garbage 13,000 slices of bread are thrown out each day. 1/3 of what farmers grow is waste because of our cosmetic standards. 40-60% of fish are thrown away at sea.

Story
14
The Elements of a Story Conflict backbone of a story: defines drama, Point of View, adds interest Characters subjects, protagonists, and narrators of stories Imagery capture imagination with metaphor and descriptions that speak to the senses and make the story tangible Foreshadowing hint at the outcome of the story Assumptions unstated parts that must be accepted in order to believe the narrative is true
15
Current Narratives
16
Local Food more sustainable higher quality food local economy boost Production tech (free market) solutions loosen trade policies for greater access Environment industrial agriculture is trashing it need bureaucratic solutions organic food Equality accessibility, social welfare

Local Food more sustainable higher quality food local economy boost Production tech (free market) solutions loosen trade policies for greater access Environment industrial agriculture is trashing it organic food & waste management Equality accessibility of agriculture social welfare programs BUT the world isn’t choosing this lifestyle women are doing the work high level of food inefficiencies BUT disagreement on who is responsible organic food is a privilege BUT there is no correlation between sufficient food and price don’t help the poorest “production for production’s sake” BUT interventions are not sustainable (e.g. nutrient supplements) “too much market choice hurts everyone”
