The Internet2 Network and LHC Rick Summerhill Director Network Research, Architecture, and Technologies Internet2 Given by Rich Carlson LHC Meeting 25 October 2006 FERMI Lab, Chicago, IL

Internet2 Commitment 0.5 FTE personnel assigned to help coordinate Internet2 efforts Strategic and tactical alliances with ESnet for physical infrastructure (L3) and e2e performance development (perfSONAR) National partner working with Member institutions (campus’) and Regional networks (RON’s & GigaPoP’s)

The Internet2 Network Hybrid IP and Dedicated Wave System utilizes Level3 optical fiber platform equipment and fiber dedicated to Internet2 sparing and equipment maintenance by Level3 including SLA for wave system Initially provisioned with ten 10-Gbps wavelengths, with unlimited capacity; scalability potential for 40 and 100 Gbps interfaces Flexible add-drop wave capabilities for RON’s and other networks Simplified and rapid wave provisioning, within minutes for full waves

Optical Topology

IP Network

Control Plane Nodes Infinera DWDM Equipment - GMPLS control plane Will be static at the beginning Grooming Equipment - Ciena CoreDirector Integration of DRAGON and Ciena control planes At router nodes, Juniper Routers - GMPLS implementation Integration of control planes will be initial high priority project Internet2 is a member of the OIF

Circuit Capabilities Connections through Infinera Platform at OC- 192 or 10 GigE Standard connection will include connectivity to the Ciena Platform at either 10 GigE or 1 GigE For connection to the dynamic network Connections through Ciena platform can have bandwidths from 50 Mbps to 10 Gbps, framed as SONET or Ethernet

Fee structure Shared IP service -- Annual Connection Fee Fee paid by connector (RON, GigaPoP) Campus pays connector appropriately Dynamic Waves -- Days to Weeks Immediate reservation – No additional Charge Advanced reservation – case-by-case basis Dedicated Waves -- Months to Year (e.g., 3y) 1 G -- $1.05/mile/month 10 G -- $9.26/mile/month http://www.internet2.edu/network/fees.html

Time Line First phase built out by early December NYC - DC - Chicago Second phase includes west to east coast circuits - March of 2007 Final phase planned for completion in June of 2007

Internet2 / ESnet Partnership Internet2 and ESnet have formed a partnership to build their respective networks on this DWDM footprint ESnet hybrid network An IP network connecting the labs An lower layer network for deterministic services - SDN Internet2 hybrid network An IP network similar to the existing Abilene network A layer 1 dynamically provisioned network providing HOPI like services Static and Dynamic services will be available to other partners In particular, for development of new architectures to support specific projects
