September 17 th /19 th, 2015 Chemistry Pick-up: Glue, Ruler Turn-in: Atomic Structure Vocab HW: Test Corrections after school. Warm Up: Finish your vocabulary, if it is finished show it to me to put in the gradebook. On a warm-up page answer the following question: 1. What do an atom and a dinosaur have in common?
2
Unit 1 Test – How did we do? Tests will be handed out next class. Class Average: 85.6
3
This fossil evidence shows us that some dinosaurs may evolved into birds.
5
Atomic Theory – Where it all started
6
Democritus – 400 BC Greek Philosopher All matter is made up of indivisible and indestructible particles called atoms. Model of the Atom: (Top Flap)
7
Dalton - 1803 Performed experiments to study how elements join together. Dalton’s Atomic Theory All elements are made up of atoms. All atoms of the same element share the same properties. Compounds are formed by combining of different atoms. Model of the Atom:
8
Thomson - 1897 Discovered the electron. Used the cathode ray for his experiment. Came up with the plum pudding model. Plums represented electrons Pudding represented the positive atom. Model of the Atom
9
Rutherford - 1911 Discovered alpha particles. Devised an experiment to investigate the positive and negative charges in the atom, called the Gold-Foil Experiment. Found that all of the positive charge is in the nucleus. Atom is mostly empty space. Model of the Atom:
10
Bohr - 1913 Electrons are found in specific circular paths called orbitals. Came up with the Bohr model. Nucleus in the center. Model of the Atom:
11
Schrodinger - 1926 Uncertainty Principle Electrons are not in orbitals. Came up with the Quantum Mechanical Model. Shows the probability an electron could be found in a given location in the atom. Model of the Atom:

Atomic Structure
14
Putting the Pieces Together Where is all of the atom’s mass located? What overall charge does the nucleus have?
15
Putting the Pieces Together What charge do the energy levels have? What is required for an atom to be neutrally charged?
16
Atomic Number – Number of Protons Element Symbol – Is either one capital letter, or one capital and one lower case letter. Average Atomic Mass – Element Name
17
Mass Number If… Mass Number = # protons + # neutrons …how could you calculate the number of neutrons given the mass number and # protons? # neutrons = Mass Number - # protons
18
Atomic Structure - Notations Hyphen Notation Given: Element name use to find p + Mass number use to find n 0 Nuclear Symbol Given: Mass number (superscript) Atomic number (subscript) Element symbol Carbon - 13
