Working with Pastels
2
Applying Pastels In watercolor you work from light to dark, but in pastel, you are building from dark to light. Apply your light color areas first and save empty spaces for your dark colors. However, you must make all your decisions from the start because once you have applied light colors you cannot go over it with a darker value without risking the clarity of your colors
3
Safety Issues To protect your lungs, never blow at accumulated pastel dust. Take the work over to the trashcan and tap the back to get rid of excess pigment.
4
Use a pencil to lightly sketch in the basic shapes and lines of the animal. Do not draw an outline of the animal. Do not draw the details of the animal…just the main shapes and lines.
5
Choose a dominant dark color and beginning applying it in all areas of the animal. If colors overlap, then apply the color lightly so that another color may be applied and blended overtop.
6
Apply colors moving from dark to light. You can always go back in and re-apply colors previously used. FOCUS on line direction!
7
Your photo should be with you for the duration of the drawing. Your drawing is your reference! You can change or alter the colors of the animal as long as you follow a dark to light scheme.
8
Chalk will smear and therefore needs to be sprayed with hairspray and/or a Fixitive. This will be done by the teacher. Use an eraser to clean the white boarder. Sign your name in the bottom right-hand corner; in the white border and under the drawing.
