The central theme of this chapter and how it relates to rest of book. Reconciliation, peace with God, hope of God, love of God… Sin that came into the world because of Adam.

5. Hope of Life to Come 5:1-11 and 8:18-39 are the bookends 5:1-11: “hope” 3x 8:18-39: “hope 9x” We can hope because of God’s love, the work of Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. In between justification and glorification: We have sufferings. Face physical death. Battle over sin. Battle over law.

Theme5:1-118:18-39 Suffering v. 3 suffering produces endurance…character…hope… v. 18 …sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory… Ministry of Holy Spirit v. 5 …God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit… v. 16 The Spirit himself bear witness…that we are children of God. v. 26 The Spirit helps us in our weakness. Hope v. 2 …we rejoice in hope of glory of God. v. 5 and hope does not put us to shame… v. 24 For in this hope we were saved. v. 25 We hope for what we do not see… Secured in God’s love v. 8 God shows his love for us in that while were were still sinners, Christ died for us. v. 10 …much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. v. 28 for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called… v. 32 He who did not spare his own Son…how will he not also with him graciously give us all things. v. 39 …nothing will be able to separate us from love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

8. The basis of our hope in God: Love of God: v. 5 “…hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” v. 8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Christ’s act of obedience ensures eternal life for those who are “in Christ.” (5:12-21)

9. Theme: We can have confidence of our hope because of Christ’s act obedience- that we are no longer are in Adam but in Christ. Important passage on doctrine of Sin, Original Sin. “The most difficult passage in the Bible…the truths are beyond reach.” (John MacArthur) v. 13-14 Sin existed before the law  there was death! v. 15-17 But Christ reverses the act of Adam “much more”!

Just as Adam did these…, so also Christ reversed these situations: “Just as…so also…” (NIV) Adam: One man’s trespass  death reigned (v. 17) Just as one trespass  condemnation to all (v. 18) Just as through the disobedience of one man  many were made sinners (v. 19) Just as sin reigned  resulting in death (v. 21) Jesus Christ: One man  believers reign in life (v. 17) So also one righteous act  justification and life for all (v. 18) So also obedience of one man  many made righteous (v. 19) So grace reigned  eternal life (v.21)

11. Not referring to the first act of sin but the result of Adam’s sin. Inherited Guilt We are guilty the second we are born. Inherited Corruption We have sinful nature so make sinful choices. Augustine- “we are unable not to sin  we are able only to sin.”
