4 Learning Outcome – Grade C-D  Sexual reproduction needs two parents, each parent produce sex cells called gametes.  Can you describe what asexual reproduction involves?

5 Genetic information  Different genes control the development of different characteristics by giving instructions to the cell.  These instructions are carried inside the nucleus by chromosomes.  These instructions are made of a chemical called DNA.

6 Recap from yesterday  Inside cells are coded instructions [bases/genes/protein].  The instructions are made of a chemical called [DNA/DNN/Chromosomes].  The instructions are carried inside the nucleus on structures called [amino acid/Chromosomes/nucleus].

7 Reproduction There are two main ways by which organisms can reproduce: What do you think sexual reproduction is? SexualAsexual Sperm Eggs Sexual reproduction needs two parents. Each parent produces sex cells, called gametes. What are the male sex cells called? What are the female sex cells called?

8 You inherit half of your chromosomes from your mother and half of them from your father. Most human body cells contain 46 chromosomes. How many pairs of chromosomes is this? 23 pairs of chromosomes Reproduction Other species have a different number of chromosomes; for example: chicken = 78 chromosomes cat = 38 chromosomes

9 Reproduction  Asexual reproduction only needs one parent. All the offspring are genetically identical to each other, and their parent.  They are clones.  Organisms that produce asexually include; Potatoes Strawberry's Spider plants

10 Asexual reproduction  Gardeners use asexual reproduction to create new plants that are identical to the parent plants.  They cannot create new varieties this way.  But they can produce required plants much quicker than growing them from seeds produced in sexual reproduction
