1 Grammar: Complements A subject complement is a word or word group that is in the predicate and that identifies or describes the subject. A predicate nominative is a word that is in the predicate and that identifies the subject. Example: The author of that story is Anne McCaffrey. Write the sentences below. Circle the predicate nominative and write P.N. above it. 1. Mrs. Wolfe is a helpful neighbor. 2. Mount Rushmore is a national memorial.

2 Grammar: Complements Subject complements always complete the meaning of linking verbs, not action verbs. Common Linking Verbs: appear, become, grow, remain, smell, stay, be, feel, look, seem, sound, taste. A predicate nominative may be a noun or pronoun. Write the sentences below. Circle the predicate nominative and write P.N. above it. 1. San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico. 2. In 1959, Hawaii became our fiftieth state.

Write the sentences below. Circle the predicate adjective and write P.A. above it. 1. Those fresh strawberries smell delicious. 2. The alligator in the pond looked hungry.
