2  By Nov. 1942 Hitler had reached as far into the Soviet Union at Moscow and Stalingrad  This is where Stalin decided to take a stand  Battle of Stalingrad is a turning point in the war – it marks the end of German advance into the Soviet Union  By January 1943 the Germans had run out of supplies and were forced to surrender and retreat

4  General Eisenhower and the US forces land in Northern Africa in late 1942 to assist the British in repelling the German advance  By May 1943 the German Afrika Korps had fully surrendered  The Allies attention turned to Italy

6  Invasion begins on the Island of Sicily  Once Sicily is taken the move to the mainland of Italy  The Allies are assisted by 50,000 anti- Mussolini Italians  In June of 1944 the Capitol city of Rome is take back from the Germans

7  In April of 1945 Italian resistance fighters capture and kill Mussolini  His dead body is hung in the streets and beaten along with his mistress and his henchmen

9  Allied troops pushed north from Italy; Soviet army pushed west into Poland  Eisenhower planned the invasion of Germany  D-Day took 2 years to plan, 3 million troops, thousands of ships, innovations in technology, good weather, and lots of luck

10  “D Day” is military code for the day an operation will take place  “H Hour” is the time of the operation  The military planned for the attack not knowing which day it would occur

11  Also called “Operation Overlord”  5 beaches- Omaha, Utah, Juno, Sword and Gold beach  160,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France  Nearly 12,000 Allied deaths

14  By August 24 th the Allies had reached Paris and freed the city of the German military
