1 G.L. 39 - Diagramming Predicate Nominatives More than one name can identify people, animals, or things. Lewis Caroll is a famous British author. (author is another name for “Lewis Carroll”) A predicate nominative is a noun that follows the verb and renames the subject person, animal, or thing It explains or defines the subject and is identical with it The subject and the predicate nominative are joined by a linking verb such as am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, become, seem

2 Examples Lewis Carroll is Mr. Dodgson’s pen name. Mr. Dodgson was a well-known mathematician. If we reverse the subject and predicate nominative and the meaning of the sentence is not affected, then we know it is a predicate nominative. A pen name for Mr. Dodgson is Lewis Carroll. A well-known mathematician was Mr. Dodgson.

3 G.L. 40 - Noun Case We can group nouns into three cases: nominative, possessive, and objective Nominative case: a noun is in the nominative case when it is the subject of a sentence or the predicate nominative Examples: The countries coexisted peacefully. (noun as subject) Margaret and Sheryl were friends. (noun as predicate nominative) Possessive case: nouns that show possession or ownership Example: The professor’s map showed the Continental Divide.

4 Objective case A noun is in the objective case when it is used as a direct object, an indirect object, or an object of the preposition Examples: Defending the Alamo cost Davy’s life. (noun as direct object) Have you told me everything? (noun as indirect object) The title of her essay refers to her experiences in Colombia. (noun as object of the preposition)
