Oceans on the Edge Learning Objective: To be able to explain how and why oceans are threatened by destruction. Key Terms: Ecosystem Dead zones Food chains Coral Reefs
2
What do you think? Create a spider diagram with your ideas on the different ways you think the world’s oceans may be damaged.
3
Threats to oceans
4
Global pattern of destruction Study the world map on pg 106 Describe the distribution of levels of risk to ocean habitats. What do you notice about the location of the dead zones? Why are enclosed seas in densely populated areas most at risk?
5
Coral Reefs Why do you think coral reefs are called ‘the rainforests of the oceans’? In pairs – using the resources provided, produce a poster illustrating the value of the coral reefs. Include the answer to the question above. Now do Q 4 pg 107
6
True/False Deep ocean areas are at high risk of destruction. Dead zones are where the ecosystem has completely collapsed. We have only identified about 10% of all the species of fish and corals. Dead zones are mostly found mid-ocean. Medicine is one reason why coral reefs are exploited.
