Marine Habitats Science Grade 3

LO: to dexcribe the marine habitats and its animals LO: to dexcribe the marine habitats and its animals

Starter: Are these animals or plants?

Animals. They are invertebrates. We call them corals. They live in the ocean.

‘Marine’ is a word that describes oceans and seas, where water is salty. Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, and nearly all of that is saltwater from oceans and seas.

Having salt in the water means that it takes a lower temperature for the water to freeze (it normally freezes at 0°C). So, some marine animals have adapted to living in waters that are below 0°C, especially around polar regions.polar regions

Temperatures in marine habitats are different depending on where in the world they are. Water can be below 0°C (its normal freezing point) around polar regions, but up to 30°C in the tropics.polar regions

About one-third of marine species live in coral reefs, which are located in the tropics, on the eastern side of continents and around islands.

Creatures who live in marine habitats can breathe underwater - by using gills. Sharks use gills to breathe.

Sharks Sharks are a group of fish Adaptations of sharks: Stream lined body for swimming. Fins to propel through the water. Sharp teeth. Gills to breath under water.

Some animals can hold their breath for a long time and just come up to the surface every now and then for air. Whales and dolphins use their lungs to breathe air. That's why they come to the surface of the ocean.

Adaptations of dolphins Streamlined to move fast, to catch food and to escape from predators Excellent hearing to protect itself from predators Swims with other dolphins for company and protection
