12 -9 Your older sister and her friend recently graduated with MBA degrees from a prestigious university. Kate and Malia’s capstone project was to create a business, and now they want to put that project into action. Their business plan calls for renting expensive designer dresses to customers using a model that is similar to renting DVDs through the mail. Kate and Malia have completed a test run of the company during the past six months and are ready to launch a full-scale venture. Kate and Malia decide to hire you to create a prototype system that could eventually be scaled up for a larger business. You talk to Kate and Malia to see how the business works. The women have purchased many designer dresses in various colors and patterns. Through local advertising in the Philadelphia area, they have attracted customers to rent these dresses. The rental cost of a dress is approximately 10 percent of its value. Shipping or courier delivery is included in the rental cost, as is the cost of dry cleaning. A prepaid mailing box is included with each rental to avoid an additional charge to the customer and streamline the process of receiving returned dresses. Customers rent each dress for seven days. Because you have learned about database design and have worked with Microsoft Access, you will create a prototype database to help you understand the business. Kate and Malia will use this prototype during their presentation to a banker when they request funds for the business start-up.

12 -10 (80%) As a team create the database design for Assignment 1 using MS Visio 2010 as follows (we will not do the rest of the Case Study) : “In this assignment, you design your database tables using a word-processing program. Pay close attention to the logic and structure of the tables. Do not start developing your Access database in Assignment 2 before getting feedback from your instructor on Assignment 1. Keep in mind that you need to examine the requirements in Assignment 2 to design your fields and tables properly. It is good programming practice to look at the required outputs before beginning your design. When designing the database, observe the following guidelines: First, determine the tables you will need by listing the name of each table and the fields it should contain. Avoid data redundancy. Do not create a field if it can be created by a calculated field in a query. You will need transaction tables. Think about the business events that occur with each customer’s actions. Avoid duplicating data. Document your tables using the table feature of your word processor. The format of your tables should resemble that shown in Figure 2-1. You must mark the appropriate key field(s) by entering an asterisk (*) next to the field name. Keep in mind that some tables might need a compound primary key to uniquely identify a record within a table. Print (save as a Visio file) the database design. Then create Access database using ForwardEngineer VBA Macro (20%)Then, create a Customer Form (use Wizard), a simple Switchboard, and 1 look-up field. Zip both Visio and Access files as a single document named: “msc310CS2yourteamname” and email to instructor (each teammate)
