Sports Commentary Project Mr. Lambert Integrated Science 1A Trimester 1, 2014

Bell Ringer Watch the GIF below. Write a sentence that describes what is going on using the following words: Applied force Acceleration Net Force

Agenda 1. Bell Ringer 2. Vocab Foldable 3. Intro to Sports Commentary Project 4. Exit Slip

Learning Targets On your Bell Ringer Sheet, write the following: We will apply physics vocabulary to real life applications.

Vocabulary Foldable Write the definition of the following physics vocabulary in your own words. Acceleration Newton’s Second Law Net Force Friction Applied Force

Vocabulary Foldable Acceleration – Change in velocity over time Newton’s Second Law – Force = mass x acceleration Net Force - sum of all forces acting on an object Friction Force exerted by a surface as an object moves across it Opposite direction of the motion of the object Applied Force - Force applied to an object by a person or other object

Sports Commentary Project It is time to put everything you have learned all together! You are expected to do a 1-2 minute sports commentary (where you talk while the video is playing). Your job is to find a 1-2 minute video clip of a sport and describe the physics that is happening in the video. You will have to use five of the six terms below: Acceleration Inertia Newton’s Second Law Net Force Friction Applied Force

Golfing (0:40) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDkNj cIoOcw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDkNj cIoOcw Script: Student A: You can see the golfer hitting the golf ball. This is an applied force, and is causing the golf ball to accelerate down the course. As the ball hits the ground, there is a friction force between the golf ball and the grass, causing the golf ball to decelerate. Student B: Once again, when he it’s the golf ball, there is an applied force. The golf ball accelerates because there is a net force pushing it forwards. Based on Newton’s Second Law, since the golf ball has a small mass, it does not need much force to cause it to accelerate. Student C:……….

Fill out the handout! Timer http://www.online-stopwatch.com/countdown- timer/ http://www.online-stopwatch.com/countdown- timer/ Once you find your video clip, show me. I need to be able to access it on my computer.
