3. Why are they in the bottom 3? Rally robin e.g. organs in the body Pairs rally ideas back and forth for a set amount of time Person to go first is the one who thinks they will be a member of SMT first (say number of years)

4. Timed pair share (another Kagan structure) Useful for opinions e.g. Should we clone animals? Pairs take turns sharing ideas/answers/thoughts on set topic for a set amount of time Topic: Which cause is easiest/hardest to deal with?

5. Why are they in the bottom 3? Attendance (register, with info on what they’ve missed) Low reading age (STAR tests) Apparently low ability (low CAT scores) SEN (SIMS) Looked after children (SIMS) Don’t put any effort in (exercise book, observations, conversations with student)

Focus and set targets Key words - games and puzzles such as word searches and anagrams Cloze (1 word in 9, both content and sentence building vocabulary) Reading out loud Reading strategies Subtitles in videos Word – File – options – proofing – check grammar with spelling + show readability (Grade 9 is year 10 so aged 14-15)

9. Improving scientific literacy - writing Oral rehearsal + reading to check Check for capital letters, full stops Provide real purposes and audience Give key words to stick into book + avoid other unnecessary writing – gives more time for the important writing
