Who are they? Got a mark book? Who’s in the bottom 3 this week/month/topic Don’t know? How will you find out? Is it worth bothering? Write their names down, make a To Do list

Why are they in the bottom 3? Rally robin e.g. organs in the body Pairs rally ideas back and forth for a set amount of time Person to go first is the one who thinks they will be a member of SMT first (say number of years)

Timed pair share (another Kagan structure) Useful for opinions e.g. Should we clone animals? Pairs take turns sharing ideas/answers/thoughts on set topic for a set amount of time Topic: Which cause is easiest/hardest to deal with?

Why are they in the bottom 3? Attendance (register, with info on what they’ve missed) Low reading age (STAR tests) Apparently low ability (low CAT scores) SEN (SIMS) Looked after children (SIMS) Don’t put any effort in (exercise book, observations, conversations with student)

First steps Priority marking IEPs Lessons they’re doing well in, observe Build a relationship, get to know them Look after yourself Remind yourself why you’re doing this job

Improving scientific literacy - reading Anything more important? Focus and set targets Key words - games and puzzles such as word searches and anagrams Cloze (1 word in 9, both content and sentence building vocabulary) Reading out loud Reading strategies Subtitles in videos Word – File – options – proofing – check grammar with spelling + show readability (Grade 9 is year 10 so aged 14-15)

Improving scientific literacy - writing Oral rehearsal + reading to check Check for capital letters, full stops Provide real purposes and audience Give key words to stick into book + avoid other unnecessary writing – gives more time for the important writing

Improving effort Teach resilience (hand in hand with problem solving) Growth mindset Practicals with a point or at least with a wow Cooperative learning Groupwork (assign roles) and pairwork e.g. question race Creativity Outdoor learning Feedback early, including within lesson Mindmaps as they receive the information Competition and fun SOLO taxonomy to show they are learning Photo displays to show what they’ve produced One to one – free up your time using an LMS, making videos. Relationships Look after your own wellbeing

Round Robin Group of 4 Like rally robin, but 4 of you All write round robin – everyone in the group records everyone’s responses

Numbered heads together Problem/task set e.g. charges on ions Think time All stand and take turns feeding back answers. Sit down when agreed. Problem – what 3 things will you do when you get back to school to help your lowest achieving students
