Before we move on, you should know… THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU & YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

What Is Mental Health? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well- being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

What causes mental health disorders? Many mental health disorders are caused by genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Genetic - Sometimes anxiety runs in families Brain chemistry (chemical imbalance) Life experiences/events (ex: head injuries, or other physical illnesses) Personality

Although the person experiencing the symptoms may feel helpless, it is important to know that help is available. People with mental health problems can get better and many recover completely. Mental health problems are common – probably a lot more common than you think.

In 2014, about… 1 in 5 American adults experienced a mental health issue 1 in 10 young people experienced a period of major depression 1 in 25 Americans lived with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression

Half of all mental health disorders show first signs before a person turns 14 years old, and three quarters of mental health disorders begin before age 24. Only 44% of adults with diagnosable mental health problems and less than 20% of children and adolescents receive needed treatment.

Not sure if you or someone you know is living with mental health problems? Experiencing one or more of the following feelings or behaviors can be an early warning sign of a problem: Eating or sleeping too much or too little Pulling away from people and usual activities Having low or no energy Feeling numb or like nothing matters Having unexplained aches and pains Feeling helpless or hopeless Smoking, drinking, or using drugs (either a new habit or more than usual)

Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared Yelling or fighting with family and friends Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships Having persistent thoughts and memories you can’t get out of your head Hearing voices or believing things that are not true Thinking of harming yourself or others Inability to perform daily tasks like getting to work or school

Treatment for Most Disorders Psychotherapy - Cognitive behavior therapy is especially useful for treating Mental Health Disorders. It teaches a person different ways of thinking, behaving, and reacting to situations that help him or her feel less anxious and worried. Medication - Two types of medications are commonly used to treat MHD:  anti-anxiety medications  antidepressants
