◦ Baptised 26 th April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon (birth date unknown but traditionally observed on 23 rd April, St George’s day) ◦ Married Anne Hathaway ◦ Three children – Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith ◦ Sadly Hamnet died at the age of 11 (of unknown causes) ◦ Legend has it he fled to London to escape prosecution for deer poaching (which means illegal hunting and killing deer) ◦ In London he became famous for his writing ◦ He retired to his home town in 1613 at age 49 ◦ He died 23 rd April 1616 aged 52

◦ He wrote 37 plays ◦ There were three types of play:- ◦ Histories – about the lives of kings and famous figures from history ◦ Comedies – which end with a marriage ◦ Tragedies – which end with the death of the main character ◦ He wrote lots of poetry ◦ In 1609 he published a book of 154 sonnets ◦ He invented more than 1700 words
