The Power of Envisioning and Diagramming in Qualitative Analysis: By Diana L. Day Rutgers University--Camden Pictorial and Graphical Analysis

In Qualitative Research Often difficult to see the forest for all those trees! Once we see the forest, often very difficult to communicate it to others. We need visual tools and techniques both to help us see and to communicate what we see to others.

Monsanto’s Transformation To Biotechnology Klein Innoven CEO Hanley Vicarious learning Top down- Org championing Executive Committee Vicarious learning Genetech Genentech tries to buy control Jaworski’s skunkwork s Jaworski’s skunkwork s Lodge LAR Innoven Corp. R&D Biotech Schneiderman

Common Conceptual Analyses Symbolic Pictures Ven diagrams, graphs or tables showing within versus outside of groups or overlapping of groups of phenomena Flow charts showing directionality and order Frameworks Organization Charts & Changes in Network Diagrams showing hubs, nodes & connections Maps showing distance, contagion, locations, topography, regionality and more

Common Quantitative Analyses Timelines or Time-Related Graphs Charts or Graphs of Some Focal Variable & its Relationship to Some Other Variable (these are usually simple 2-dimensional but can be rarely 3-dimensional)

Good References on the Topic Anything by Edward Tufte –Visual Explanations: Images & Explanations, Evidence and Narrative –Visual and Statisitical Thinking: Displays of Evidence for Decision Making –Envisioning Information –The Cognitive Style of Power Point Information Graphics—Edward Harris Thinking Visually—Malcolm Craig Say It With Charts—Gene Zelazny

Windows PC Adobe Indesign for text and graphics MAC Quark for text and graphics Software

Conclusions Without being able to simplify the complexity and richness Without being able to focus on key aspects to highlight with these tools Without these tools and, in particular, without being able to SHOW ourselves and others what we mean It would be very difficult for qualitative research to move forward.
