2  Japan wanted to build an empire  A big reason was for more resources (land, fuel, etc.)  By 1940 the Japanese had taken over Manchuria and moved into the heart of China  Summer of 1941-Japan took over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

3  The US, gained knowledge of Japan’s Pacific Empire goal  July 1941-Cut off oil trade with Japan  Japan’s next move would be surprise and take over

4  Japan attacks Pearl Harbor in Hawaii  Around 2,300 Americans were killed  1,100 or so wounded  The US wasted little time and declared war on Japan  The United States was now in the fight with the Allies

5 More attacks  As Pearl Harbor was being attacked, the Japanese sent raids to other Pacific islands  Hong Kong (Great Britain), Guam and Wake Island (US)

6 Cont.  Early 1942… The Philippines New Guinea Dutch East Indies Burma Thailand  Japan controlled around 1 million sq miles of land in Asia Roughly 150 million people under Japanese Control

7 Bataan Death March-1942  After taking the Philippines, Japanese soldiers forced POWs (mostly American) to walk 50 miles up Bataan Peninsula  Showed extreme cruelty towards POWs Thought of them as inferior for surrendering  Around 16,000 die on this brutal march
