Aims of the Session Students are expected to: -identify and exemplify the usage of punctuation marks, - write sentences using correct punctuation marks, -Write words with correct spelling.

1- after: - Yes/No : Yes, I think / No, I …… - exclamations, dates: Oh, yes/ Oh, no on October 10,1971. - family name followed by the first name: Sha’at, Mohamed - adverbial clause/phrase or prepositional phrase at the beginning of a sentence At work, he never talks. When he entered the room, he sat down. - introductory words: He said, “I am busy.” - transitional elements (in fact, indeed, however, consequently, yet, still) The Comma: use the comma

2- to separate: - numbers and series of items: 2,000,000/ She bought a pencil, a ruler and a map. - non-restrictive relative clause: Ali, who works hard, is a good man. 3- before: - an “-ing” form phrase: She went out, leaving her baby alone. - connectives in long compound sentences: He goes to the farm in the morning, and she goes for a walk in the afternoon.

What is the function of the comma in the following sentences: 1- John, whose sister is a nurse, is a doctor. to separate a non-restrictive relative clause. 2- A needle is used for sawing; a watch, for telling the time. To replace omission. 3- In the evening, students prepare their lessons. After adverbial phrase. 4- Jim is an engineer, not an accountant. show contrast.

The Period: use the period: 1- at the end of: - a statement She went to the market. - an imperative Sit down. - abbreviation e.g./ Ph.D./ V.I.P. - indirect question. Please tell me what happened. 2- inside: - abbreviation a.m/ p.m - quotation marks She said, “I am happy.” - numbers with decimals 5.20/.05.

The Semicolon is used: 1- between two main clauses: He feels thirsty; he has not drunk anything for a long time. 2- before conjunctions inside clauses e.g., nevertheless, however, consequently, hence. It was cold; nevertheless, I went swimming. You deserve to be punished; however, I’ll forgive you this time.
