Warm-up Dr. Smith enters the nurse’s station and begins to dictate notes saying that Mrs. Jones needs to have an exploratory laparotomy, but he suspects he will end up doing a bilateral salpingoophorectomy. Before the surgery he wants a CXR, EKG, CBC and ABG done, stat. You suddenly feel thankful that Mrs. Slaughter spent so much time teaching you medical terminology. What do the terms laparotomy, salpingoophorectomy and bilateral mean? What is the general term for CXR, EKG, CBC and ABG?

Etymology (etymon- true sense) Study origin of words Indicates the origin and historical development of a word Helps you to decipher words. The foundation of medical terms are Greek and Latin. 75% of all medical terms are based on Latin or Greek terms. The Greeks were the founders of modern medicine. Latin is the language of choice for medicine and science.

Medical Terminology It is impossible to learn all medical terms, but it is possible to figure out their meanings by analyzing the word parts. What are the word parts? Prefix, suffix, root word, combining vowel, combining form By learning the meaning of the basic word parts, you will frequently be able to interpret the meaning of a word

Other Types of Terminology Eponyms - named after people Ex. Parkinson’s Disease Acronyms - terms that stand for longer phrases ex.: COPD- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ex. AIDS- acquired immunodeficiency syndrome Abbreviation - shortened form of word. ex. mL- milliliter
