An Open User Centric Smart Home Architecture Supervisors: Oz Shmueli & Alexander Kinko 1 Anastasia Logvinenko Atara Maltzman
2
Background Smart home technologies has been gaining popularity in the last decade. Building smart home has 3 main steps: Choosing devices Installation configuration Most common way building a smart home includes contracting a vendor who takes responsibility for all steps. 2
3
Current Approach: Vendor - Centric The user - the smart home owner. The technology - systems, standards and devices The interface - the connection between the user and the technology. 3
4
Disadvantages of Current Approach Limited upgradability. Lack of standardized interfaces limit multi-vendor upgrade solutions Extremely costly to combine equipment Independent systems - do not share resources costs of smart home systems are usually very high. unique protocols that cannot easily mix and match equipment from different vendors to reduce the price largely an "installer" market. Who will be representing the vendor which is most profitable for him. Extremely high cost solution for special needs users. 4
5
Vision Approach: User-Centric The user is the center. central control for all sub-systems Uniform access to all sub-systems create his own user experience of his home system. Fail proof 5
6
Vision Approach: User-Centric - Continue The Abstraction Layer Object Oriented Shared resources Single language Class rules and assertions 6
7
Vision Approach: User-Centric - Continue The interface GUI : user – abstraction Simplified system – hidden technology from user The Technology Adopter (wrapper): abstraction – technology Easy integration for new systems 7

Objects 10 Technology Abstraction Basic rule book
11
Abstraction 11 SHL makes technology accessible for user Technology Abstraction – Objects Basic rule book SHL InterfaceScenarios Verification: Compilation Real time
12
Rule Book of Products - Classes Vendor supplies rule book for his products – classes of his products Installer supplies relations between classes and objects User can define objects of this classes User can define his special behavior for his house 12
13
Relations between objects Installer make relations between different objects 13
