An Open User Centric Smart Home Architecture Supervisors: Oz Shmueli & Alexander Kinko 1 Anastasia Logvinenko Atara Maltzman

Background  Smart home technologies has been gaining popularity in the last decade.  Building smart home has 3 main steps:  Choosing devices  Installation  configuration  Most common way building a smart home includes contracting a vendor who takes responsibility for all steps. 2

Current Approach: Vendor - Centric  The user - the smart home owner.  The technology - systems, standards and devices  The interface - the connection between the user and the technology. 3

Disadvantages of Current Approach  Limited upgradability.  Lack of standardized interfaces limit multi-vendor upgrade solutions  Extremely costly to combine equipment  Independent systems - do not share resources  costs of smart home systems are usually very high.  unique protocols that cannot easily mix and match equipment from different vendors to reduce the price  largely an "installer" market. Who will be representing the vendor which is most profitable for him.  Extremely high cost solution for special needs users. 4

Vision Approach: User-Centric  The user is the center.  central control for all sub-systems  Uniform access to all sub-systems  create his own user experience of his home system.  Fail proof 5

Vision Approach: User-Centric - Continue  The Abstraction Layer  Object Oriented  Shared resources  Single language  Class rules and assertions 6

Vision Approach: User-Centric - Continue  The interface  GUI : user – abstraction  Simplified system – hidden technology from user  The Technology  Adopter (wrapper): abstraction – technology  Easy integration for new systems 7

Vision Approach: User-Centric  The user is the center.  central control for all sub-systems  Uniform access to all sub-systems  create his own user experience of his home system.  Fail proof 8 User-centric Abstraction

Creation of abstraction 9

Objects 10  Technology Abstraction  Basic rule book

Abstraction 11 SHL makes technology accessible for user  Technology Abstraction – Objects  Basic rule book  SHL InterfaceScenarios Verification: Compilation Real time

Rule Book of Products - Classes  Vendor supplies rule book for his products – classes of his products  Installer supplies relations between classes and objects  User can define objects of this classes  User can define his special behavior for his house 12

Relations between objects  Installer make relations between different objects 13

Smart Home Control Choice  Open source  Worldwide standard for Home and Building Control.  Various of devices and application for smart home 16 KNX standard system is chosen.

Devices to objects 17

Security System choice  Sensors and secure devices  Support secured connection 18 PIMA security system is chosen.

Rule definitions  rules and restrictions for objects 19

Fail Proof System  Databases of objects, rules and scenarios  Check defined rules and conditions  System Verification  Compilation  Run time 20

Flow  Hardware to objects  rules and restriction of shred objects  Smart home behavior program  Real time control 21

Visual Control Choice Makes it possible for the system to interface various users with different needs.  Open source programming  Face recognition user interface 22 Intel creative camera is chosen.

System Architecture  various objects integrated smart home system  Rules and home behavior implemented  Integrated to main controller  Periphery send data to controller  Controller process data  Controller send orders 23

Future extension Infrastructure creation  Open source  Community  “internet of things” 24 Integrated system Smart home Security system Watering system Fire extinguishing system Interface Camera
